Doda, Kishtwar districts grappling with shortage of doctors

'Health Deptt in deep slumber'

BY ABID PAMPORI

Doda, Jan 16: The tall claims of Health Department to improve health services in hilly districts have fallen flat with the fact that out of 438 sanctioned posts of doctors in the erstwhile Doda district 226 post lying vacant.

As per information, the district wise sanctioned strength of posts and vacancies position in Doda district a total number of sanctioned posts of doctors is 215 and posts filled up 113 while 102 lying vacant. In Kishtwar district the number of sanctioned posts were 101, filled up posts 50, vacant 51.Ramban district sanctioned strength 122, posts filled 73 and 49 posts are vacant.

The above mentioned facts clearly indicate that there is acute shortage of doctors in erstwhile Doda district and the same is the case with other regions of the state also. To overcome this grave situation the state government needs to formulate a strategy to engage the qualified unemployed doctors especially those who have completed their MBBS from various medical colleges and universities outside the state and country.

It is pertinent to mention here that the doctors who have attained their MBBS degrees from outside India have to qualify MCI entrance test in India to be eligible for appointment in India and the the state of Jammu and Kashmir as well. To overcome the shortage of doctors in hilly and remote areas the state government has engaged candidates with BAMS and BUMS degrees. Similarly the unemployed doctors having MBBS degrees from outside the country should be engaged on probation basis and they should be given opportunity to qualify the MCI examination within some stipulated time period after their engagement so that the crisis is overcome.
