Dialogue Is Only Way To Bring Back Peace In Kashmir: CPI

BY ABID PAMPORI

The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement on April 17, 2017 on Kashmir poll-related developments:

The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India takes a serious concern of the growing alienation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir from the national mainstream as reflected in the lowest ever 7.13 per cent turn-out of voters in the bye election to the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency. The handling of the situation in the Kashmir Valley as a mere law and order issue by both the BJP-led government at the Centre and the BJP-PDP state government  have worsened the situation and alienated the people in a big way. The anger and frustration reflected in the boycott of election by a large number of people.

The rampant use of Army, using of human beings as shield by the Army to curb rising protests by the youth and branding all protesters as anti-nationals have only further angered the voters there and made them more frustrated with the Modi government’s dealing of the matter. An innocent voter used as a shield by tying him to military jeep and parading him in villages is a shocking incident which needs to be probed thoroughly and strong action needed to stop such inhuman acts by armed forces in the name of maintaining law and order.

The party reiterates its stand that the only way peace can be brought back in the Valley is through dialogue with all the stake holders. Now that both the central and state governments have lost the confidence of the people there, repeated attempts need to be made for a dialogue which in the beginning may not succeed. Nothing can restore confidence except the honest action for implementation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Also steps should be taken simultaneously to restrain the Army from attacking the civilians.
